ENTRY FEE: Free! There is NO cost to enter the contest.
ENTRY DUE DATE: Sign up early! Sign-up will take place until all posts are assigned. You will be assigned a numbered post at a specific location in Contoocook. Sign up online at www.HopkintonRec.com. You can also email the filled out form with your name, address, phone number, email address and name of your scarecrow to Recreation@Hopkinton-NH.gov
CONSTRUCTION: Scarecrows must be durable and able to stand up to sun, wind and rain showers. All decorations must be firmly attached to your scarecrow and then to the 4 ft. post. We recommend 2 x 4's and broomsticks to provide support. You will need to bring rope or wire to attach your scarecrow to the 4 ft. post. You are welcome to visit your scarecrow and keep it in good presentable condition.
NOTE: We reserve the right to remove or disqualify any entries that do not maintain their ability to be displayed or are distasteful. Religious, controversial or political entries are not allowed. All entries must be hand-made. No electronics may be used in this old-fashioned scarecrow contest. Hopkinton Recreation Department is not responsible for any scarecrow displays.
MATERIAL SELECTION: 25% of the scarecrow must be made up of traditional materials (leaves, hay, etc.). Make sure your materials will last for the duration of the contest.
SIZE: The minimum size is 4 feet tall. The maximum height is 7 feet. Scarecrows and props must fit in a 6 x 6 foot area.
SET UP: Registration in advance of setup is required and you must register by noon on October 15th. You may bring and set up your scarecrow entry any time during the daylight on Saturday, October 2 to Sunday, October 17th. All scarecrow entries must be in place by 2 p.m. on Sunday the 17th to be judged. We welcome other scarecrows after that, but they will not qualify for judging (you still need to contact the Rec Dept. to be assigned a permitted space). You will be assigned a fence post number by the Rec Dept. so you will need to know what number to set up on before you set up!
DURATION: All entries will be on display to the public through the month of October.
WINNERS: Winning entries will be announced on the Recreation Department's Facebook page.
PICK-UP: PLEASE pick up entries from Monday November 1st through 2 pm on Saturday November 6th. The posts and numbers should stay on site. Please help us out by picking up your displays.
